The Dutch detachment will operate alongside Norwegian F-35 units under NATO command. Their role falls within the quick reaction alert framework, requiring aircraft to remain on standby 24 hours a day to respond to any potential intrusions.
The deployment follows a request from the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), NATO’s central command in Europe. SHAPE is coordinating the deployment and operations of the fighter aircraft.
The Dutch Ministry of Defence confirmed the deployment is part of efforts to deter Russia. Defence Minister Brekelmans stated: “It is essential that we contribute to the defence of NATO territory and the security of Europe.”
He added: “We are once again doing this with our most advanced capabilities. By deploying these Dutch F-35s to guard the airspace over Eastern Europe, we are protecting military equipment destined for Ukraine.”
Minister Brekelmans further noted the operational importance of the mission: “We can also respond swiftly to (potential) violations of NATO airspace. In doing so, we are literally keeping the Russian threat at a distance.”
He highlighted recent successes: “It was recently demonstrated in Estonia that the deployment of our F-35s has been highly effective in this regard.”
