Netherlands to buy JASSM-ER cruise missiles for its F-35 fleet

By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. State Department has approved the Netherlands' request for a potential sale of Lockheed Martin AGM-158 JASSM-ER (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range) cruise missiles. This move is set to bolster the arsenal of the Netherlands' F-35A Lightning II fighter jets, enhancing the country's long-range precision strike capabilities.

The Netherlands intends to acquire 120 AGM-158B JASSM-ER cruise missiles along with 18 units designated for testing purposes, featuring inert warhead mock-ups. The proposed package also includes full-scale mass models, support equipment, diagnostic tools, and a comprehensive supply of spare parts. In line with American tradition, the deal also encompasses logistical and training support packages. The total cost of the acquisition is estimated to reach up to USD 908 million.

This approval comes as no surprise, following the Netherlands Ministry of Defence’s announcement last April about initiating a program to purchase long-range precision missile systems for all branches of its armed forces. The program aims to include the PULS artillery missile system for the army, RTX Tomahawk cruise missiles for the navy, and the AGM-158B JASSM-ER for the air force.

The AGM-158 JASSM-ER has already been procured by Poland and Australia, with its integration into the F-35 Lightning II expected to expand its list of operators in the coming years. The missile, which made its combat debut in April 2018, has seen a growing interest from various countries seeking to enhance their strategic strike capabilities.
