The demonstration involved maintaining a continuous and secure 5G data connection across three different national networks. This capability is vital for modern defence operations, particularly within coalitions where forces must operate seamlessly beyond national boundaries.
The test was powered by Nokia’s 5G Core Software as a Service (SaaS) and AirScale 5G base stations using ReefShark chip technology, running on Telia’s commercial infrastructure. Nokia’s MantaRay NM system provided intelligent network monitoring and management throughout the process.
Jarmo Vähätiitto, Major General and Chief of C5 at the Finnish Defence Command, said: “This trial marks a significant milestone in showcasing the dual-use possibilities of 5G for defence while also enhancing communication capabilities within the NATO domain. We are delighted to have partnered with Nokia and Telia on this project and are eager to explore further opportunities for integrating 5G into our operations.”
The successful trial highlights how commercial 5G technologies can be adapted to meet stringent military requirements. It also demonstrates the potential for network slicing to provide dedicated, secure communications channels for critical applications.
Jari Collin, CTO at Telia Finland, commented: “5G and network slicing enable secure, mission-critical communications. In collaboration with the Finnish Defence Forces and Nokia, we are pioneering in using commercial technology for critical defence communications. This trial meets the Defence Forces’ needs and proves that commercial 5G networks can be utilized also in this domain.”
The breakthrough enables defence forces to maintain reliable connectivity for applications such as real-time situational awareness, remote command and control, and secure data sharing. It also lays the groundwork for future use cases in NATO and allied operations.
Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, said: “Seamless 5G slice continuity over country borders is a breakthrough for defence operations, enabling secure and reliable communications for collaborative missions that extend beyond national territories. Our trial with Telia and the Finnish Defence Forces reflects our commitment to delivering robust 5G solutions for defence customers, helping them achieve mission-critical objectives.”
