Nokia to lead EU-funded PROACTIF project advancing robotics and unmanned technology

By Defence Industry Europe

Nokia has been chosen to lead PROACTIF, a major European initiative funded by the EU’s Chips Joint Undertaking. The project aims to boost Europe’s resilience and leadership in electronic components and systems (ECS) technologies, while advancing autonomy in the European drone and robotics sectors.

The PROACTIF consortium includes 42 partners and four affiliates from 13 countries, focusing on surveillance of critical infrastructure and emergency management. The venture is set to transform how Europe responds to emergencies and protects essential assets.

“Nokia’s extensive expertise has helped establish drone technology best practices and transform drones into daily helpers for public safety and mission-critical operations,” said Thomas Eder, Head of Embedded Wireless Solutions at Nokia. “We are honored to lead this project. It demonstrates Nokia’s commitment to fostering innovation and resilience across Europe.”

The project is expected to generate around €90 million in revenue by 2035, along with 50 new products and over 15 industry patents. It also aims to create hundreds of jobs, dozens of collaborations, and attract more than €40 million in additional investments.

Under Nokia’s leadership, PROACTIF will bring together academic institutions, SMEs, and industry leaders to develop eco-efficient, cybersecure, and safe unmanned vehicle (UxV) systems. These systems will support Europe’s civil security by delivering cost-effective and advanced technological solutions.

PROACTIF will produce nine key technology building blocks and five UxV platforms designed for autonomy, rapid deployment, and interoperability. The deployment of UxV technologies will enable efficient sensor data collection, improving situational awareness and understanding of emergencies.
