Northrop Grumman says Project Talon is accelerating military autonomy with YFQ-48A Talon Blue and Talon IQ for future missions

Northrop Grumman is advancing a self-funded autonomous aircraft initiative built around its YFQ-48A Talon Blue and Talon IQ testbed ecosystem. The company is using the Project Talon portfolio to accelerate development of connected autonomous systems, software and human-machine teaming for future military operations.

The strategy moves beyond developing autonomous functions for individual aircraft and instead focuses on networks of connected systems. Northrop Grumman said these systems are intended to exchange information, support faster decisions and operate together across increasingly complex missions.

“Autonomy is no longer about what a single platform can do on its own,” said Craig Woolston, vice president and general manager of Research and Advanced Design for Northrop Grumman. “The future lies in connected ecosystems where autonomous systems can rapidly enhance the warfighter’s decision-making.”

“That’s the approach we’re investing in to deliver autonomous operational advantage,” Woolston said. Northrop Grumman is pursuing that approach through Project Talon, which combines software development, flight testing and modular aircraft design.

Talon IQ is a next-generation autonomous testbed ecosystem built around the Scaled Composites Model 437 aircraft. It allows government, industry and third-party partners to develop and refine autonomy software on established hardware with support from Northrop Grumman’s integration team.

The testbed uses an open architecture intended to make software development and integration more flexible as autonomous capabilities evolve. Northrop Grumman said the approach is designed to accelerate testing and iteration while keeping mission-autonomy capabilities scalable and adaptable.

Talon IQ also provides the control foundation for Talon Blue, a modular autonomous aircraft within the same portfolio. Talon Blue uses advanced manufacturing techniques intended to lower costs and simplify production, while its airframe can be configured for different missions and customer requirements.

The aircraft has received the official U.S. Air Force designation YFQ-48A and reflects close alignment with Air Force priorities, according to Northrop Grumman. It remains a company-funded initiative aimed at advancing autonomous technology rather than a separately identified Air Force-funded development effort.

Northrop Grumman said Talon Blue can conduct precise missions through simple operator inputs, reducing the need to put warfighters directly at risk. The company describes the aircraft as an autonomous wingman intended to provide flexibility and survivability for U.S. and allied forces.

Together, Talon IQ and Talon Blue are intended to shorten the development cycle for both autonomous software and aircraft hardware. Northrop Grumman is also investing in connected development environments, industry partnerships and faster software integration to support continued upgrades.

“The future of autonomy isn’t defined by a single breakthrough, it’s built through continuous innovation,” Woolston said. “Our focus is on creating an ecosystem where new capabilities can be rapidly developed, integrated and refined so they can keep pace with evolving missions and deliver greater value to the warfighter.”
