The SMART Demo motor incorporated several advanced technologies and alternative manufacturing methods aimed at improving performance and reducing production time and costs. These included additive manufacturing for long-lead tooling and nozzle structures, new robotic production techniques, and an improved, cost-effective solid propellant.
The motor also utilised alternative suppliers and materials to address supply chain constraints and reduce dependency on long-lead components. These efforts support more flexible and resilient production capabilities across a variety of launch platforms and applications.
Jim Kalberer, vice president of propulsion systems at Northrop Grumman, stated: “Northrop Grumman’s second SMART Demo motor, and the innovations we pursue with the company-funded effort each year, are enabling us to move faster than ever. We’ve successfully demonstrated industry-informed innovations that can accelerate production, strengthen supply chains and reduce solid rocket motor costs.”
The SMART Demo programme demonstrates the integration of advanced technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes in the design, development, and testing of new solid rocket motors. It also provides existing production programmes with the opportunity to adopt these innovations, helping to streamline manufacturing and reduce costs.
Northrop Grumman plans to conduct SMART Demo annually as part of its continued investment in solid rocket motor development and propulsion technologies. The demonstrated technologies could potentially support large-scale production efforts, including applications such as the Golden Dome for America missile defence initiative.
The SMART Demo initiative also broadens Northrop Grumman’s supplier network by expediting the testing and qualification of new materials and manufacturing partners. These streamlined processes enhance production efficiency while maintaining high reliability and performance standards.
