Norway and Navantia settle Helge Ingstad dispute through judicial mediation

By Defence Industry Europe

The Norwegian Ministry of Defence and Spanish shipbuilder Navantia have reached a settlement in the long-standing dispute over the frigate Helge Ingstad. The agreement, finalised through judicial mediation led by the Oslo District Court, brings an end to all related legal proceedings.

As part of the settlement, Navantia will provide discounted services on life cycle support and upgrades to Norway’s F310 class frigates over the next six years. The total value of the discount may reach up to €47.5 million during the agreement’s term.

This resolution also secures Navantia’s continued role in supporting the Norwegian Navy’s frigates, ensuring stability in the maintenance and enhancement of the F310 class. The Ministry confirmed the settlement involves a transfer of value through reduced pricing for future work rather than a direct financial payment.

“I am pleased that this case has been resolved through an amicable solution,” said Norwegian Minister of Defence, Tore O. Sandvik. “Navantia has for several decades been and will still be an important supplier to the Norwegian Defence sector and for the support of the Norwegian frigates. We are now eager to strengthen the professional relations between the parties in the years to come.”

Navantia, a state-owned Spanish company, originally constructed the F310 frigates and has been responsible for their maintenance since 2013 under several framework agreements. “Navantia is pleased to have reached an agreement that puts an end to this case and extends our collaboration with Norway,” said Navantia Chairman, Ricardo Domínguez.

He added, “This allows us to put our expertise at the service of European defence and collective security, and demonstrate our commitment to our customers.” The agreement marks a renewed chapter in the longstanding partnership between Norway and Navantia.
