Oshkosh Defense is continuing its expansion in Africa with another order for heavy-equipment transporters for Morocco’s armed forces. Closer military and technical cooperation between the United States and African countries is creating opportunities for American defense manufacturers, although business conditions vary across the continent.

The company received a second Direct Commercial Sales order from Milwaukee-based Optimum Vehicle Logistics, its exclusive distributor in Morocco. It covers 50 Heavy Equipment Transporter A1 tractors and 50 MN573 heavy-duty trailers designed and manufactured in partnership with Dutch company Broshuis.

Follow-on order strengthens Morocco’s military transport capacity

The purchase also includes spare parts, services and training. The first batch of HET A1 tractors has already been delivered and is operational, allowing the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces to integrate the platform into their logistics operations.

The additional equipment supports Morocco’s broader military mobility modernization program. It is intended to help reposition combat forces, sustain armored formations and move critical assets between theaters.

The HET A1 is designed to transport main battle tanks, recovery vehicles and self-propelled artillery. Paired with the MN573 trailer, it supports armored force sustainment, vehicle recovery and rapid movement.

Morocco weighs further tank purchases and supplier diversification

Morocco’s substantial tank fleet provides the wider context for its investment in heavy transport. According to official figures, its land forces have 222 M1A2SA Abrams tanks and 162 advanced M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks.

Recent reports indicate that Morocco intends to strengthen its land forces further while avoiding complete dependence on American equipment and the U.S. defense industry. It is reportedly considering a large purchase of K2 Black Panther tanks manufactured by South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem, although no binding decision has been made.

The transporter order addresses the logistics required to move and sustain armored formations. The reported interest in the K2 reflects a separate procurement consideration: increasing combat capability while broadening Morocco’s choice of suppliers.

Oshkosh builds overseas business through customer and industrial partnerships

For Oshkosh, the follow-on purchase builds on an established customer relationship and a platform already in Moroccan service. The inclusion of parts, services and training extends the scope of the contract beyond equipment delivery.

“Working alongside Optimum Vehicle Logistics, our exclusive distributor in the Kingdom of Morocco, Oshkosh Defense is advancing Morocco’s modernization objectives through the delivery of heavy tactical wheeled vehicles,” said Pat Williams, Chief Programs Officer at Oshkosh Defense. “This additional order reflects the growing demand for our mission-ready, performance-proven mobility solutions designed to meet evolving requirements quickly and effectively.”

Oshkosh Defense manufactures military vehicles and equipment for transporting heavy platforms, including main battle tanks. It is placing greater emphasis on European and African markets, with light tactical vehicles, including the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, attracting particular interest in Europe.

The Morocco contract also illustrates how cooperation with European industry supports Oshkosh’s international business. Its partnership with Broshuis combines American heavy tactical vehicles with Dutch trailer manufacturing for an African military customer.

Broshuis, a family-owned company founded in 1885, is one of Europe’s largest specialty trailer manufacturers and has supplied military customers for decades. Optimum Vehicle Logistics distributes U.S.-manufactured vehicles, logistics equipment and spare parts worldwide and has worked with Oshkosh Defense for more than a decade.
