Oshkosh Defense has been awarded a U.S. Army contract to deliver 97 additional FMTV A2 Low-Velocity Airdrop 6x6 and 4x4 Cargo vehicles. The award supports the Army’s modernization objectives by expanding improved LVAD capabilities and includes Arctic Kits to enable operations in extreme cold environments.

The FMTV A2 LVAD Cargo variant is designed to ensure the Army’s Mobile Brigade Combat Teams remain supplied, mobile, and mission-ready from the outset of operations. Built for rapid airdrop into austere and contested environments, the platform delivers essential equipment and sustainment while reducing reliance on fixed infrastructure and extending operational reach.

“The FMTV A2 LVAD closes a known gap in mobility for airborne forces,” said Pat Williams, Chief Programs Officer at Oshkosh Defense. “It enables accelerated logistics and maneuver support where traditional resupply isn’t possible, extending the reach and effectiveness of forces at the tactical edge.”

The 6×6 Cargo variant began testing in 2023, including rollover protection validation, rigging exercises, roller loading, and simulated airdrop impact testing. It became the first to successfully complete airdrop testing in 2024, marking a key milestone in advancing airborne capability.

The 4×4 Cargo variant began testing in mid-2024 and completed three consecutive successful airdrops in early 2025 at the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Grounds. Together, the successful tests demonstrate reliability under demanding LVAD conditions and reinforce the maturity of the FMTV A2 LVAD platform across multiple configurations.

The contract represents another step in the Army’s plan to upgrade its existing LVAD fleet with a modernized, rapidly fielded capability. This approach supports continuous improvement through Soldier feedback and incremental enhancements aligned with operational needs.
