The Philippine Naval Air Wing currently operates two AW159 Wildcat helicopters, which serve as the air component of the new-generation warships acquired from the Republic of Korea. Unofficial statements from Manila suggest that the option of purchasing a further four to six units is under consideration.
By integrating the Spike NLOS, the helicopters gain the ability to strike surface targets up to 50 kilometres from the launch point. This capability is viewed as an important element of the nation’s deterrence system.
The Spike NLOS missile system can be adapted to a growing number of helicopter platforms. Beyond the AW159 Wildcat, it is already integrated with the Boeing AH-64E Apache attack helicopter and the multi-role UH-60 Black Hawk.
In the present context, the system can provide additional armament capable of neutralising key elements of air defence networks before strikes with shorter-range guided missiles, which typically cover around eight kilometres. Its capacity to destroy surface targets, including naval ones, highlights the versatility of its combat potential.
