Poland and Türkiye explore technology transfer deal for 155mm artillery ammunition

By Defence Industry Europe

Poland and Türkiye are advancing talks on strategic defence cooperation, with a focus on the domestic production of 155mm artillery ammunition. The discussions took place during a meeting between Polish Deputy Minister of National Defence Paweł Bejda and Ilhami Keles, Director-General of Türkiye’s state-owned defence company, MKE.

MKE has offered a full technology transfer package that would allow Poland’s state-owned PGZ S.A. to manufacture all components of 155mm shells locally. This proposal supports Poland’s goal of increasing its military self-sufficiency in response to regional security developments.

“We held technical discussions on future joint projects between MKE & PGZ with a delegation led by Mr. Arkadiusz Bak, Board Member of Poland-based PGZ Company,” MKE said in a statement. The company also confirmed that its general manager met with the Turkish ambassador in Warsaw as part of broader business development efforts.

Bejda highlighted the urgency of strengthening domestic defence production amid growing security challenges in the region. “The Polish defense sector is currently facing enormous challenges due to the dynamic security situation in the region,” he stated, adding that the current environment also offers “significant opportunities for growth and the ability to make production capacities independent of external suppliers.”

Poland has been ramping up its defence industry, particularly in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine and the broader need to reduce reliance on foreign arms. The proposed partnership with MKE is seen as a strategic step toward enhancing the country’s artillery capabilities and long-term defence resilience.

According to a statement from the Polish government, MKE’s offer “fits well with Poland’s defense objectives and the country’s current security requirements.” The local production of artillery ammunition is expected to play a key role in strengthening the readiness and independence of Poland’s Armed Forces.
