Poland signs $120 million deal for Boeing GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bombs

By Defence Industry Europe

Poland has signed a government-to-government Letter of Offer and Acceptance with the United States for the purchase and delivery of Boeing GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bombs. According to a statement from the Armament Agency, the contract is worth around USD 120 million net, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028.

The number of bombs covered by the order has not been disclosed. They will equip Poland’s multirole Lockheed Martin F-35A fighters as well as modernised F-16V aircraft.

In May this year, the US Department of State approved the sale to Poland of 1,400 GBU-39/B bombs, four GBU-39/T training bombs and mass-dimensional mock-ups. At that time, the total was valued at up to USD 180 million.

The advantage of the GBU-39/B bombs is their low weight, which helps limit material damage near the target area. In addition, with the BRU-61/A rack, up to four bombs can be carried on a single pylon, significantly increasing the combat capabilities of multirole aircraft.

Guided by a GPS-based system, the GBU-39/B can strike stationary targets located around 100 kilometres from the release point. Boeing is currently fulfilling a contract for the production and delivery of the 20th production series, with an option to extend further until the end of 2035.
