Polaris Raumflugzeuge secures contract for reusable hypersonic research vehicle

By Defence Industry Europe

The German aerospace company Polaris Raumflugzeuge has been awarded a contract by BAAINBw (Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and In-Service Support) to design a two-stage, fully reusable hypersonic research vehicle. The agreement also includes future options for manufacturing and flight-testing the full-scale vehicle.

The project aims to develop a horizontal take-off hypersonic testbed that will support both defence-related and scientific research. The vehicle is expected to serve as a platform for advanced experiments in high-speed flight, aerodynamics, and propulsion technology.

In addition to its primary research role, the system has the potential to function as a small-satellite launcher. By incorporating an expendable upper stage, it could be used to place payloads into orbit, expanding its range of applications.

Polaris expressed its gratitude for the Bundeswehr’s continued trust in its technological expertise. The company described the project as an ambitious step in advancing hypersonic flight capabilities and looks forward to the next phases of development.
