QinetiQ awarded AUD 47 million contract to support Australian defence aviation safety

By Defence Industry Europe

QinetiQ has secured a AUD 47 million contract to support the Defence Aviation Safety Authority (DASA) in enhancing aviation safety across Australia’s defence sector. The five-year agreement, with an optional five-year extension, will begin on 1 July 2025.

The contract will focus on strengthening safety standards through updated policies, comprehensive training programmes and the continued development of high safety protocols. It consolidates previous short-term agreements into a unified strategy, ensuring long-term collaboration and consistency.

“For more than 25 years, we have supported Australia’s evolving aviation safety needs,” said Gary Stewart, Chief Executive Australia Sector. “This new contract positions us to enhance defence aviation safety and capabilities further.”

QinetiQ will provide DASA with access to its global expertise, drawing on resources from both the United Kingdom and the United States. This international reach is intended to deliver specialist skills and technical knowledge aligned with DASA’s mission to improve military aviation and space safety.

“We have built a strong and progressive relationship with DASA over the years,” Stewart added. “With our team of experts and established industry partnerships, we are ready to address current and future aviation safety challenges.”

As part of the agreement, QinetiQ has partnered with Muru Management Consulting, a 100% female- and Aboriginal-owned safety consultancy. Muru’s capabilities in aviation operations and safety management will strengthen the partnership’s contribution to defence aviation safety.

“I am delighted that Muru and QinetiQ has formed a successful and complementary partnership, that has been recognised by DASA,” said Donna Cowey, Managing Director of Muru. “We will now be able to promote and raise awareness of future opportunities for other First Nations aviation and engineering organisations to support DASA.”

Together, QinetiQ, Muru and other collaborators will work closely with DASA to ensure Australia’s defence aviation safety framework remains robust and responsive to future needs. The agreement marks a significant step forward in advancing aviation safety within Australia’s defence operations.
