Rauma shipyard launches first Pohjanmaa-class multi-purpose corvette for Finnish Navy

By Defence Industry Europe

The first multi-purpose corvette for the Finnish Navy’s Squadron 2020 project was launched on Wednesday, 21 May 2025 at Rauma shipyard. This marks a major milestone in the programme and demonstrates Rauma Marine Constructions’ (RMC) capacity to handle complex shipbuilding projects.

The Squadron 2020 project remains on schedule, with construction of the second corvette having begun in October 2024 and its keel laid on 8 May 2025. The pace of building is expected to accelerate as work progresses on the remaining vessels.

The direct employment impact of the Squadron 2020 project in Finland is equivalent to over 3,600 person-years. RMC is responsible for building four Pohjanmaa-class multi-purpose corvettes, designed to operate year-round in all Baltic Sea conditions.

“We have increased the capacity of Rauma shipyard purposefully while strategically implementing significant investments in the shipyard area. Rauma shipyard is now in peak condition,” said Mika Nieminen, CEO of RMC.

The shipyard’s enhanced capability is built on strong engineering expertise, efficient project management and a commitment to high-quality, complex shipbuilding. “The newly launched vessel is a strong indication of the close and goal-oriented co-operation between the Finnish Government, the Finnish Defence Forces, the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Institute, the Finnish Navy, Rauma Marine Constructions, Saab and all our industrial partners,” stated Timo Ståhlhammar, Project Director of RMC’s Squadron Project.

Significant investment throughout the 2020s has strengthened Rauma’s infrastructure and production capacity, including a closed multi-purpose hall, steel production upgrades, a launching barge and heavy transfer ramps. These improvements have supported the successful execution of demanding processes such as the corvette launch.

The launch process began in early May, involving transfer of the vessel to a launching barge and into the harbour, followed by towing to the shipyard’s dry dock for further work. The success of this complex procedure reflects a decade of long-term investment and development by Rauma shipyard.

“The building of these corvettes will advance the shipbuilding industry and technological know-how in Finland. RMC is ready to utilise the capabilities acquired through the Squadron 2020 project both in Finland and internationally,” added Mika Nieminen.
