“This innovative licensed production arrangement is the culmination of decades of partnership,” said Barbara Borgonovi, president of Naval Power at Raytheon. “As Japan invests in this critical weapon system, it will strengthen their defense capabilities while reinforcing the vital security alliance between our nations.”
The deal marks the continuation of a more than 50-year defence collaboration between Raytheon and MELCO. It supports Japan’s efforts to bolster its domestic defence manufacturing and missile capabilities while further solidifying the U.S.-Japan security partnership.
The ESSM Block 2 is a dual-mode, ship-launched, guided missile designed for short to medium-range defence, offering enhanced manoeuvrability and performance compared to its predecessor. With reduced reliance on shipboard illumination and advanced digital processing, the system is adaptable to evolving threats and is integrated across various combat platforms.
Japan remains an active member of the NATO SEASPARROW Consortium, which includes 12 participating nations. This contract underscores Japan’s ongoing commitment to joint defence development and regional security.
