Rheinmetall, the Düsseldorf-based technology corporation, has been awarded a contract for explosive ordnance clearance in the Baltic Sea. This work is essential to prepare the area for connecting an offshore windfarm to the power grid, with the project commissioned by grid operator 50Hertz under the OST-6-1 initiative.

The contract, valued in the low double-digit million-euro range, encompasses the detection, identification, documentation, and recovery of explosive ordnances. Recovered transportable waste and weapon remnants will either be handed over to authorities or safely detonated on-site. This marks Rheinmetall’s first major offshore contract for explosive ordnance clearance.

Offshore operations, managed by Rheinmetall Project Solutions GmbH, began in July 2024 and are scheduled for completion by May 2025. The project highlights Rheinmetall’s expertise in offshore explosive ordnance detection and clearance, ensuring all work is conducted in compliance with legal and environmental regulations.

The cleared area will enable 50Hertz to lay offshore extra-high voltage cables and install two offshore platforms near the Fischland-Darß region. Rheinmetall is leading the project in collaboration with specialised companies from Germany and Norway, further showcasing its capabilities in critical infrastructure projects.
