Central to the effort is the local production of the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle at Rheinmetall Automecanica, supported by a robust Romanian supply chain to reduce reliance on external suppliers. Rheinmetall Munitions Romania will produce medium-calibre ammunition for infantry and air defence systems, while propellants will be manufactured at the Victoria Explosive Powder Factory using Rheinmetall’s technology.
The company has partnered with Romanian firms including Uzina Automecanica Moreni, Interactive Software SRL, and MarcTel-SIT to integrate national expertise into the production process. These collaborations are expected to enhance local procurement and assembly, fostering industrial cooperation and capability development.
A new Rheinmetall Excellence Centre in Romania will focus on transferring technical know-how to the local workforce. Equipped with advanced simulators and practical training programmes, the centre will provide expertise in the operation and support of systems such as the Lynx vehicle.
Rheinmetall’s investment will generate hundreds of jobs across sectors like manufacturing, engineering, and technical services, contributing significantly to the Romanian economy. Strengthening local supply chains and fostering industrial growth are also key outcomes of the initiative.
“With this strategic initiative, Rheinmetall Automecanica is not only improving Romania’s defence capabilities, but also laying the foundation for a sustainable and independent defence industry,” the company stated. “By integrating advanced technologies and training, Rheinmetall is ensuring the future viability of Romania’s defence sector while further expanding its own global production network.”
