A new ammunition factory in Lithuania, developed by German defence company Rheinmetall in collaboration with Lithuanian firms, is expected to commence operations in early 2027. The project, which is progressing on schedule, is set to bolster Lithuania’s defence capabilities and contribute to the national economy.

Jose Manuel Fernandez Bosch, CEO of Rheinmetall Expal Munitions, confirmed the timeline after discussions with Lithuanian Economy and Innovation Minister Lukas Savickas in Vilnius. He stated that work is advancing efficiently, with the factory anticipated to be operational at the beginning of 2027.

The facility will be constructed in Baisogala, a town in the Radviliškis district, and will focus on producing 155 mm artillery ammunition. The project is being carried out in partnership with Lithuanian state-owned companies Epso-G Invest, a subsidiary of the energy group Epso-G, and Giraitės Ginkluotės Gamykla (GGG).

Minister Savickas emphasised that the project is on track and has not encountered significant obstacles. He also highlighted ongoing discussions regarding Lithuania’s broader efforts to develop a more extensive defence industry ecosystem.

While the minister did not specify future joint projects with Rheinmetall, he noted that the factory’s construction would create wider economic opportunities. Various sectors, including construction, equipment servicing, and logistics, are expected to benefit from the investment.

The establishment of the Baisogala factory marks a strategic development for Lithuania’s defence sector. It aligns with the country’s aim to strengthen its industrial base while contributing to regional security and economic growth.
