Rolls-Royce Power Systems has secured one of the largest defence contracts in its history, covering the supply of around 200 mtu PowerPacks for the German Armed Forces’ Puma infantry fighting vehicle. The agreement reinforces the company’s role as a technology partner to the Bundeswehr, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028.

The new propulsion systems will feature the mtu 10V 890 engine, designed to improve operational reliability and reduce the risk of breakdowns under demanding conditions. The contract also reflects increased demand in the defence sector and ongoing efforts to enhance military readiness.

“This order sends a strong signal of confidence in our technology and our industrial capabilities. It marks another important milestone for Rolls-Royce Power Systems and underlines our role as a reliable partner to the German Armed Forces. At the same time, it demonstrates that we are scaling up in a targeted manner within a growing market – by expanding our production capacities, investing in modern manufacturing and continuing to build up our skilled workforce,” said Jörg Stratmann, Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

The Puma infantry fighting vehicle is considered a flagship platform of the Bundeswehr, with around 350 units in service since 2013. It is being developed by Rheinmetall and KNDS as a long-term replacement for the Marder vehicle.

“This order is a milestone. The Puma’s powerpack is unique in its compactness and power density – effectively the Formula 1 engine of tank propulsion systems. With the new powerpacks, we are making a significant contribution to the Bundeswehr’s operational readiness and modernisation, whilst at the same time strengthening European defence capabilities through scalable, proven technologies,” said Knut Müller, Senior Vice President for Government Business at Rolls-Royce.

The mtu PowerPack integrates the 10V 890 ten-cylinder engine, delivering 800 kilowatts of power, alongside power electronics, an optimised cooling system and the RENK HSWL 256 gearbox. Additional features include integrated subsystems and a coarse dust blower designed to remove sand and fine particles in challenging environments.

The propulsion system is designed to combine performance, compactness and durability, drawing on decades of experience in military engine technology. Weighing around 3.5 tonnes, it represents a fraction of the Puma’s total weight while enabling mobility across a range of operational conditions.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems said it is expanding production capacity to meet growing demand. This includes new production lines, increased staffing and modernised facilities to support higher output while maintaining quality standards.
