“We are pleased to welcome Romania into the F-35 enterprise,” said Lt. Gen. Mike Schmidt, director and program executive officer of the F-35 Joint Program Office. “The integration of the F-35 will significantly strengthen NATO’s deterrence capabilities by providing unmatched strategic, operational, and tactical advantages.”
The F-35 program is a cornerstone of NATO’s modern deterrence strategy. Known for its stealth capabilities, advanced sensor systems, and unparalleled operational connectivity, the aircraft is designed to counter emerging threats and ensure air superiority for decades to come. By acquiring the F-35, Romania joins an exclusive group of 20 nations that operate this fifth-generation fighter.
The presence of the F-35 in Europe continues to grow, with the aircraft becoming a vital component of alliance-based deterrence. “The F-35’s growing presence across Europe demonstrates NATO’s commitment to next-generation air power,” said Mara Motherway, vice president of Strategy and Business Development at Lockheed Martin.
Romania and Lockheed Martin have been strategic defence partners for nearly 30 years. This acquisition represents a deepening of that relationship and reinforces Romania’s commitment to advanced military technologies.
“The acquisition of the F-35 further fortifies Romania’s national security and deterrent capability,” said Bridget Lauderdale, vice president and general manager of the F-35 Lightning II Program at Lockheed Martin. The aircraft is expected to seamlessly integrate with Romania’s existing F-16 fleet, enhancing the operational capabilities of both platforms.
Romania’s transition to the F-35 is supported by the European F-16 Training Center (EFTC), established last year in collaboration with the Netherlands. Located in Romania, the EFTC provides tailored training programs for pilots and maintainers, ensuring they are prepared to operate and sustain the advanced aircraft safely and effectively.
The F-35 Lightning II is the world’s most advanced fighter jet, currently operational at 33 bases worldwide. Over 1,000 F-35s have been delivered globally, generating more than 940,000 flight hours. Its adoption by Romania signals a major technological leap in the country’s defence capabilities and positions it as a leader in NATO’s modern air power initiatives.
As adversaries develop more sophisticated systems and legacy aircraft age, the F-35 is seen as essential for maintaining air dominance and ensuring collective defence among allies. The aircraft’s acquisition also reflects Romania’s commitment to contributing to NATO’s strategic goals and strengthening security in the region.
Romania’s first F-35s are expected to enter service in the coming years, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the nation’s defence history.
