Saab has been contracted to provide the Royal Australian Navy with an additional AUV62-AT autonomous anti-submarine warfare (ASW) training target. The system is an autonomous underwater vehicle that simulates a submarine, torpedo or uncrewed vehicle.

The AUV62-AT is used by navies worldwide as a state-of-the-art training solution, replacing live submarines in a wide range of training scenarios. It reduces costs while maintaining the quality and scope of training opportunities for naval forces.

The system can be launched and recovered from either ship or shore and includes communications software as well as mission evaluation features. Each training programme can be tailored to meet specific demands, accelerating learning and strengthening the Royal Australian Navy’s operational capability.

Saab Australia Managing Director, Andy Keough CSC, said the new contract would enhance the country’s defence capabilities. “The AUV62-AT is part of Saab’s extensive range of technology enabled training solutions designed to provide realistic scenarios to enhance combat skills and preparedness,” said Mr Keough.

The system can be programmed to provide all levels of training, from basic to advanced, for surface, air and sub-surface ASW assets in any combination. Its use allows longer and more intensive training sessions without the need to deploy submarines or additional resources.
