Royal Navy: HMS Dauntless successfully neutralises drone swarms in live-fire exercise

By Defence Industry Europe

HMS Dauntless, one of the Royal Navy's most advanced Type 45 destroyers, has demonstrated its formidable defensive capabilities by successfully neutralising swarms of drones during Exercise Sharpshooter off the Welsh coast. This live-fire exercise served as the final assessment before the vessel's deployment with the UK's Carrier Strike Group to the Indo-Pacific region.

The exercise simulated contemporary threats, including those observed in the Red Sea, allowing HMS Dauntless to showcase its cutting-edge weaponry, radars, and sensors. The destroyer engaged and destroyed numerous Banshee Whirlwind aerial drones, which can exceed speeds of 200mph, and Hammerhead uncrewed surface vehicles designed to mimic real-world threats.

Minister for the Armed Forces, Luke Pollard MP, observed the exercise firsthand and commended the crew’s performance: “The speed and skill shown by the crew of HMS Dauntless in defending the ship against a complex and sustained series of drone attacks was incredibly impressive.” He emphasised the importance of adapting to evolving threats, stating, “This test shows how the Royal Navy is adapting to face evolving threats, including from drone attacks in the Red Sea, as well as how we are working closely with industry to harness the latest technology to keep the UK secure at home and strong abroad.”

HMS Dauntless employed a range of weaponry during the exercise, including the Phalanx Automated Gun, 4.5-inch and 30mm guns, and an embarked Wildcat helicopter equipped with Martlet missiles capable of targeting threats up to 6km away. The training, designed by the Royal Navy’s Fleet Operational Standards and Training (FOST) in collaboration with QinetiQ, subjected the ship to persistent real and virtual threats both day and night.

Reflecting on the exercise, Commander Ben Dorrington, Commanding Officer of HMS Dauntless, remarked: “The realism of the exercise and training delivered provided a unique opportunity for the ship’s company to demonstrate they are ready to defend, ready to fight and ready to win.” He added that, following the conclusion of Exercise Sharpshooter, the crew looks forward to some well-deserved Easter leave before deploying as part of the Carrier Strike Group in the spring.
