On December 23, the US Department of Defence announced the signing of a USD 946.5 million contract with RTX Corporation to produce and supply additional Patriot air defence systems to Romania. An initial funding tranche of USD 464 million has already been released, fully financed by Romania through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) process.

Deliveries under this contract are scheduled to be completed by the end of December 2029. So far, neither party has disclosed further details about the terms of the agreement.

Romania’s Air Force currently operates three Patriot PAC-3+ fire units, acquired as part of a previous procurement effort. A fourth unit was transferred in October to Ukraine as part of military aid efforts.

The latest contract likely includes three more Patriot systems intended for Romania’s land forces. There is speculation that a portion of the funding could be sourced from other contributors. For instance, Norway has pledged USD 127 million towards the purchase of a new Patriot system for Romania.
