Russia uses intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in attack on Ukraine for the first time

By Defence Industry Europe

On the morning of 21 November, Russia launched a large-scale missile attack on Ukraine, marking the first confirmed use of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in the ongoing conflict. The Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Air Force reported that the missile was launched from Russia’s Astrakhan region.

The attack also involved a MiG-31K fighter jet firing an airballistic Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missile from the Tambov region, while strategic Tu-95MS bombers operating from the Volgograd region launched seven Kh-101 cruise missiles. Ukrainian air defence systems successfully intercepted six of the Kh-101 missiles, mitigating their potential damage.

“Once again, we urge citizens not to ignore air raid alerts!” stressed the Air Force of Ukraine, calling for caution and responsible sharing of information about military operations and threats to national security. They added that other missile impacts did not result in significant damage.

Missile strikes were reported across several regions, including Chernihiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kyiv, and Poltava. In Dnipro, missiles struck an industrial facility and a rehabilitation centre for individuals with disabilities, leading to fires in the affected areas.
