Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte underlined the enduring importance of the transatlantic Alliance amid heightened political tensions. He stated, “Europe is safe because of what Europe is doing itself within NATO, but also because we have that strong transatlantic relationship.”

Rutte stressed that the United States and Canada remain committed to NATO not only for Europe’s defence but also for their own security interests. He said, “for the United States to stay safe, you need a safe Arctic, a safe Atlantic, and a safe Europe,” highlighting the mutual nature of collective defence within NATO.

Addressing questions about tensions linked to Greenland, Rutte declined to comment publicly, citing the need for quiet diplomacy inside the Alliance. He explained, “as soon as I do, I cannot any longer help to somehow… to basically defuse the tension, to deescalate,” adding that he was working on the issue behind the scenes.

On Arctic security, Rutte said Allies shared concerns about growing activity by Russia and China in the region and agreed that NATO must do more. He said, “we have to protect the Arctic against Russian and Chinese influence,” noting that NATO ambassadors had already taken decisions to strengthen collective defence there.

Rutte also linked recent increases in European defence spending to pressure from Donald Trump, arguing this had forced Allies to act. He said, “without Donald Trump, this would never have happened,” referring to progress towards higher defence spending and greater European responsibility.

Turning to the war in Ukraine, Rutte warned against losing focus despite discussions on peace efforts and funding commitments. He said, “this focus in Ukraine should be our number one priority,” and added, “they need our support now, tomorrow and the day after,” stressing that continued military assistance was essential for European and US security.
