Saab delivers Carl-Gustaf M4 virtual indoor trainers to UK Armed Forces

By Defence Industry Europe

Saab has successfully delivered its Carl-Gustaf M4 virtual Indoor Trainers (IDT) to Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) for use by the UK Armed Forces. The delivery comes just eight months after the contract was signed, marking a swift fulfilment of the agreement.

The advanced training system enables personnel to train in complex scenarios with unlimited flexibility, while providing immediate, high-fidelity data feedback to accelerate learning. “This state-of-the-art system offers unlimited training opportunities in complex scenarios, providing immediate, high-fidelity data feedback for accelerated learning,” Saab confirmed in its announcement.

The CG M4 IDT can be set up in under 15 minutes, turning any location into a training facility. Its portable Gunnery Unit allows for both individual and crew training to take place wherever required.

Weapon replicas used in the system are constructed from the original Carl-Gustaf blueprints to ensure accurate form, fit and function, including realistic haptic feedback. This immersive design enhances training effectiveness by closely simulating real-world weapon handling.

The trainer also features precise ballistic simulation for all Carl-Gustaf ammunition types, allowing users to practise with realistic trajectories under varied operational conditions. It supports mastery of sights, lead angles and point of aim in a safe and controlled environment.

Instant feedback on gunner performance, weapon handling and ballistics is a key component of the CG M4 IDT, significantly enhancing the speed and quality of learning. Saab notes the system’s cost-effectiveness, enabling more soldiers to be trained efficiently through a high-throughput model.

The Carl-Gustaf M4 IDT expands Saab’s Ground Combat Indoor Trainer (GC IDT) portfolio, which already includes systems for NLAW, AT4 and small arms. These are available in both compact deployable Gunnery Units and larger studio-based configurations.
