SEA and Terma launch advanced naval countermeasures system at Euronaval 2024

By Defence Industry Europe

British defence specialist SEA and Danish engineering firm Terma have jointly introduced a new combined countermeasures capability named Ancilia Powered by C-Guard MKII at the Euronaval 2024 exhibition. This state-of-the-art solution is designed to enhance the survivability of naval vessels in complex combat environments, providing a broader range of fleets with access to advanced protection technology.

The innovative system leverages SEA’s Ancilia trainable decoy launcher and Terma’s C-Guard MKII, which features rapid response capabilities and advanced threat evaluation algorithms. This integration results in a sophisticated, end-to-end countermeasure solution that protects naval fleets against a variety of threats, including missiles and torpedoes, without the need for vessel manoeuvring.

Ancilia represents a significant technological step forward from traditional fixed decoy launchers. Its trainable design allows for flexible, automated responses to incoming threats and can be installed quickly on diverse maritime platforms due to its compact size and weight. With its open architecture, the system supports the launch of standard 130mm NATO decoys and other effectors, making it adaptable and retrofit-friendly for existing vessels.

By combining Ancilia with the C-Guard MKII, the system maximises threat assessment and engagement capabilities. Terma’s advanced algorithms and seamless integration with a ship’s combat management system ensure optimal deployment of countermeasures, increasing the effectiveness of the defence strategy across radar and infrared spectrums.

Richard Flitton, Managing Director of SEA, highlighted the significance of this collaboration: “In a rapidly evolving landscape with diverse threats, Ancilia Powered by C-Guard MKII brings together leading countermeasures capabilities to offer a solution based on cutting-edge technology. Providing protection across multiple spectrums, the new capability will help enhance the survivability of naval vessels in combat situations.”

With the upcoming deployment of Ancilia in a tier one navy and C-Guard systems already in global use, the new combined solution aims to modernise defensive strategies for vessels currently operating with outdated technology. Thomas Elisberg, Director of Naval Sales at Terma, emphasised the benefits of the partnership: “Ancilia Powered by C-Guard MKII will offer navies across the world access to an integrated countermeasures solution, incorporating both fixed and trainable launchers. The system’s enhanced flexibility and effectiveness ensure optimal placement of decoys based on the evolving threat picture.”

SEA’s recent £135 million contract with the UK Royal Navy to implement its Ancilia capability is a testament to the growing trust in this advanced defence technology. The collaboration between SEA and Terma marks a strategic advancement in naval countermeasures, offering a robust, customer-centric solution for modern naval defence.
