This modernisation enhances precision and increases the OC-ALC’s ability to produce the F135 engine, which powers the F-35 Lightning II. The improvement aligns with the U.S. Air Force’s broader goals of increased readiness and technological advancement to support military operations.
Jacob Sellers, a jet engine mechanic at OC-ALC, emphasised the importance of innovation in defence production. He stated that adopting cutting-edge technology ensures faster, more reliable engine assembly to meet the needs of the warfighter.
The Smart Stacking Tooling Enhancement is specifically designed for mapping and stacking F135 rotor assemblies, playing a crucial role in streamlining production. The tool enables two machines to run simultaneously with just one mechanic, increasing output while maintaining accuracy.
By integrating advanced mapping technology, the system provides more consistent and precise readings, ensuring improved stack prediction for rotor assemblies. This leads to more predictable and repeatable results, reducing errors and enhancing quality control.
The automation of the assembly process simplifies training, allowing new personnel to adapt more quickly and contribute efficiently. With a 75% reduction in assembly time, the enhancement improves productivity without compromising on quality.
As part of the Department of Defense’s largest maintenance, repair, and overhaul facility, the F135 engine repair line plays a key role in sustaining military aircraft. The implementation of the Smart Stacking Tooling Enhancement reinforces OC-ALC’s reputation as a leader in engine maintenance and repair innovation.
