Strategic partnership between F-35 Joint Program Office and Platform One drives defence innovation

By Defence Industry Europe

The F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) and Platform One (P1) are driving innovation and cost efficiency through a strategic collaboration that enhances the F-35 Lightning II aircraft’s capabilities. Platform One provides reusable technology, reducing development costs and accelerating new capabilities, while the F-35 programme contributes valuable feedback and features benefiting broader U.S. Department of Defense programmes.

As a fifth-generation stealth multirole fighter aircraft, the F-35 serves U.S. military branches and international partners. To maintain its leadership in defence systems, the JPO has invested in the F-35 JPO Cloud, a modern, centralised, government-owned platform supporting software development, testing, and data analytics across multiple classification levels.

Platform One’s contributions, including its DevSecOps tools and Iron Bank secure software repository, strengthen the security and flexibility of the JPO Cloud. By using these tools, the F-35 programme achieved an Authority to Operate (ATO) in just six months, significantly reducing development timelines compared to traditional methods.

The JPO Cloud supports over 800 users and 60 projects, enabling secure collaboration between government teams and industry partners. With six deployed capability suites in a Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) environment, the platform promotes scalability and automation for rapid delivery of mission-critical updates.

A key feature of the collaboration is the integration of Platform One’s Cloud Native Access Point (CNAP) and Zero Trust architecture. These technologies bolster the security posture of software development environments, ensuring secure access and scalability across DoD programmes while accelerating the deployment of critical tools.

This partnership has also improved the security of the software supply chain through hardened container images and streamlined deployment processes using Platform One’s Big Bang framework. These advancements align with the DoD’s DevSecOps Reference Architecture, offering flexibility to support the diverse requirements of the F-35 programme.

By integrating cutting-edge technology and fostering collaboration, the F-35 JPO and Platform One are driving innovation, improving security, and reducing costs. This ensures the F-35 programme remains a critical asset for national defence while delivering benefits across the DoD community.
