Sweden and Finland strengthen role in European defence through NATO integration

By Defence Industry Europe

On October 3, U.S. European Command (EUCOM) hosted high-level military discussions with Sweden and Finland to reinforce their growing roles in European defence and security as NATO’s newest members. The talks, led by Maj. Gen. Russell Driggers, EUCOM’s Director of Plans, Policy, and Strategy, alongside Finland’s Maj. Gen. Sami Nurmi and Sweden’s Maj. Gen. Johan Pekkari, focused on further integrating the two nations into NATO’s defence framework.

Since joining NATO in 2023 (Finland) and 2024 (Sweden), the two countries have become key contributors to regional security, leveraging their strategic positions in Northern Europe and longstanding military cooperation with the U.S. and other NATO members. Their integration enhances NATO’s capabilities in land, air, sea, space, and cyber operations.

“The military forces of our three nations have longstanding relationships operating together in the harsh environments of the High North,” said Maj. Gen. Driggers. “Our partnership with Finland and Sweden not only enhances regional security but reflects a shared commitment to democratic values and collective defence.”

Both Swedish and Finnish military leaders highlighted the significance of their countries’ NATO memberships in bolstering security across Europe. Maj. Gen. Pekkari of Sweden noted, “Our collaboration is essential to maintaining regional stability and strengthening our collective security through NATO.” Finnish Maj. Gen. Nurmi added, “NATO membership strengthens our security and equips us to better face evolving threats, contributing to the collective defence of the Euro-Atlantic region.”
