The Mk82 is a streamlined, general-purpose bomb equipped with a pointed nose and stabilising fins. Its core consists of a solid bomb body that can be adapted with components to function as either a guided or unguided munition, with potential conversion into GBU-12 Paveway II or GBU-38 JDAM guided bombs.
According to Martin Anderberg, head of combat aircraft systems at FMV, this acquisition represents another step in strengthening Sweden’s operational air combat capability. It is also part of Sweden’s broader integration into NATO’s defence framework and aligns with recent Swedish efforts to modernise its air force.
The new bombs are set to be delivered in the spring of 2024, enhancing the armament of the JAS 39 Gripen C/D and E models. The contract has a total value exceeding 100 million Swedish kronor, which, based on previous European orders, could correspond to a delivery of up to 500 units.
This procurement follows Sweden’s recent acquisition of Litening 5 targeting pods from Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles. These investments demonstrate Sweden’s commitment to strengthening the operational effectiveness of its Gripen fighter fleet as part of its evolving security strategy.
Rheinmetall Italia SPA, one of Europe’s key manufacturers of Mk82 bombs, continues to play a crucial role in supplying precision munitions to NATO-aligned nations. This acquisition reinforces Sweden’s ability to maintain a credible and effective defence posture within NATO.
