Sweden orders additional improved Ribbon bridges from GDELS-BS to enhance water-crossing capabilities

By Defence Industry Europe

General Dynamics European Land Systems – Bridge Systems (GDELS-BS) has signed a new contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the supply of additional Improved Ribbon Bridges (IRBs). The announcement was made by the company via social media on 23 April 2025.

The IRB is described by GDELS-BS as a modern pontoon bridge system capable of operating as both a floating bridge and a ferry. It is designed to carry all types of NATO military vehicles, including the heaviest main battle tanks.

According to the manufacturer, the IRBs can be interconnected using coupling adapters and are compatible with the M3 amphibious bridge system. This enables the formation of bridge structures of almost unlimited length to support complex military operations.

Sweden has already been operating IRBs and began strengthening its water-crossing capabilities in June 2022. This included the acquisition of a double-digit number of M3 amphibious vehicles, which can cross wet gaps up to 400 metres wide.

The first units of the Swedish M3 amphibious bridge system were delivered in November 2024. The latest IRB contract further enhances Sweden’s ability to ensure rapid and secure troop and equipment mobility across diverse terrain.
