Saab has received a contract from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to equip the Swedish Navy’s five Visby-class corvettes with the Sea Ceptor air defence system from MBDA. The upgrade, worth approximately SEK 1.6 billion, will significantly bolster both Swedish and NATO air defence capabilities.

The project is part of FMV’s broader strategy to maintain and modernise the Visby-class vessels. The Sea Ceptor system will extend the ships’ engagement range and enable defence of a substantially larger area than current systems allow.

“This modification strengthens both Sweden’s and NATO’s air and missile defence by increasing the Swedish Armed Forces’ operational capability and ability to operate across the entire conflict spectrum. With the air defence system on board, the Visby-class corvettes will continue to be a vital platform for many years to come,” said Mats Wicksell, Head of Saab’s business area Kockums.

FMV has already procured the Sea Ceptor system from MBDA in a separate order. Saab will begin modification work on the vessels and system installation in early 2026.
