Swedish Army receives first M3 amphibious bridge system from GDELS

By Defence Industry Europe

General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) – Bridge Systems has delivered the first M3 amphibious bridge and ferry system to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV). The handover ceremony took place at GDELS’ Kaiserslautern facility, with Brigadier General Jonas Lotsne representing the SDMA and Dr. Christian Kauth, Managing Director of GDELS – Bridge Systems, in attendance.

This delivery is part of the first batch of M3 systems ordered by Sweden. Once all four contracted lots are delivered, Sweden will join Germany and the United Kingdom as one of NATO’s primary users of the M3 system, gaining the capability to span a total obstacle width of 400 metres. The M3 system is interoperable with the Improved Ribbon Bridge (IRB) and Standard Ribbon Bridge (SRB), enhancing its versatility for NATO operations.

The M3 amphibious bridge and ferry system is recognised as NATO’s fastest wet-gap crossing solution. It can be deployed as either a floating bridge or a ferry, capable of transporting even the heaviest main battle tanks across wide water obstacles. The system’s rapid deployment capability—operational within minutes—is particularly valuable in modern, fast-paced combat scenarios.

The M3 system has proven its reliability in diverse environments, from tropical regions to arctic conditions. In addition to Sweden, the system is used by several NATO and allied nations, including the United States, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia, Brazil, and South Korea.
