ILA Berlin 2024 - Defence Industry Europe

Lockheed Martin, the global aerospace and deterrence company, and Rheinmetall, a leading international systems provider for security technology, have signed a new collaboration memorandum of understanding (MoU) at ILA Berlin. The two companies aim to collaborate in areas including land, air and naval forces as well as in simulation and maintenance. Specifically, this includes rocket artillery systems, laser weapon systems, simulation and training for land vehicles and helicopters, short-range air defence (SHORAD) and other areas of cooperation.

Airbus will be presenting its new Wingman concept at the International Aerospace Exhibition ILA in Berlin. In military aviation, a “Wingman” is a pilot in another aircraft that protects and supports the flight lead, delivers more tactical options and thus contributes to mission success. In the Airbus concept, the Wingman is going to operate very much in the same way - only that it is neither a pilot nor a fighter jet flown by one. It is a fighter-type drone that will be commanded by a pilot in a current combat aircraft such as the Eurofighter and can take on high-risk mission tasks that would pose a bigger threat to manned-only aircraft.

Germany continues to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine with supplies of weapons and military equipment. According to a German government announcement, Berlin has transferred a third IRIS-T SLM air defence system to Ukraine, an unspecified number of additional missiles for the IRIS-T SLS system, and one TRML-4D air surveillance radar.

The HENSOLDT Group met or exceeded its target on all key performance indicators in the 2022 financial year. Even before the turning point (Zeitenwende) in German foreign and security policy had time to make a substantial impact on the industry, HENSOLDT once again reported significant growth. At the same time, the company further extended its strategic position as a leading provider of sensor technology and defence electronics. With a strong order intake of € 1,993 million, the order backlog climbed to a record level of € 5,366 million (previous year: € 5,092 million). Revenue grew significantly in 2022 by 16% to € 1,707 million (previous year: € 1,474 million). Adjusted EBITDA rose € 31 million year on year to € 292 million (previous year: € 261 million). The adjusted EBITDA margin excluding business volume with low share of added value likewise increased significantly to 20.4% (previous year: 19.4%).
