Netherlands: contract with Naval Group for Orka-class submarines officially signed

The Dutch Ministry of Defence has officially signed a contract for the construction of four new Orka-class submarines, marking a significant step in enhancing the Netherlands’ naval capabilities.

Navantia has commissioned the S-81 “Isaac Peral” submarine to the Spanish Navy in the Naval Base in Cartagena. The event has been presided by the Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, and attended by the Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral general Teodoro López Calderón; the Chief of Staff of the Spanish Navy, Admiral general Antonio Piñeiro; along with Navantia’s Chairman, Ricardo Domínguez and Navantia’s shareholder (SEPI) Chairwoman, Belén Gualda.

Spanish shipbuilding company Navantia explained the key points of the S-80 submarine design to ensure a successful and low-risk decision for the Orka program.

The Polish Ministry of National Defence intends to purchase three new-generation submarines under the "Orka" programme to strengthen its navy.
