Leading European space company Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Moroccan operator Panafsat to develop a new satellite communications system. This initiative, announced during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Morocco, aims to bring very-high-throughput services (VHTS) to 26 African countries, 23 of which are French-speaking, reaching approximately 550 million people across an area of 12 million square kilometres.

This deal marks a significant step in expanding the constellation, which will eventually consist of 13 satellites, including 12 equipped with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology and one using optical technology. The project is part of Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and is managed by ESA in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI).

This is a key success for the development of future geostationary communication satellites using optical feeder links to increase significantly the capacity currently available. These solutions will play a key role to bridge the digital divide and provide broadband connectivity for all by 2025. The objective is also to boost satellites capacity in order to reduce the number of satellites required to meet the users demand.
