Thales to open new facility in Northern Ireland and expand missile production for Ukraine

By Defence Industry Europe

Thales, the French-owned defence company, has announced plans to open a third facility in Northern Ireland as part of a £100 million investment. The expansion will support the production of lightweight multirole missiles (LMMs) for Ukraine under a new £1.6 billion deal.

The company currently operates a factory in east Belfast and a test facility in County Down. Thales managing director Nigel MacVean confirmed that the investment would also see the recruitment of 200 additional staff over the next two years.

The UK government’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has placed the order for 5,000 LMMs through Defence Equipment & Support, its procurement arm, on behalf of the Ukrainian government. The deal will be funded through a loan underwritten by United Kingdom Export Finance (UKEF) as part of a £3.5 billion support package for Ukraine.

Thales began delivering LMMs to Ukraine at the end of 2024 under an initial £162 million contract for 650 missiles. The additional order aims to enhance Ukraine’s defence capabilities, with the LMMs playing a key role in countering Russian helicopters and the NLAW anti-tank weapon proving effective in Kyiv’s defence.

Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly welcomed the investment, highlighting its benefits for Northern Ireland’s economy and workforce. She emphasised that the expansion would create high-skilled jobs and contribute to Ukraine’s ability to defend itself in the ongoing conflict.
