Thales to supply advanced sonar suite for Dutch Orka-class submarines

By Defence Industry Europe

Thales has secured a contract to equip the future Orka-class submarines of the Royal Netherlands Navy with a state-of-the-art sonar suite. This agreement, signed with Naval Group, is part of the Replacement Netherlands Submarine Capability (RNSC) programme.

The sonar suite will enhance the submarines’ ability to detect and track underwater threats, providing a clear and detailed picture of the acoustic environment. As modern submarines become increasingly silent, the advanced system will be crucial in maintaining operational superiority.

Thales is a global leader in underwater defence systems, with its technology deployed on more than 50 submarines worldwide. Its collaboration with Naval Group and the Royal Netherlands Navy builds on a long-standing partnership, strengthening the Netherlands’ naval capabilities.

The sonar suite will include multiple high-performance acoustic sensors, such as bow, flank, and obstacle-avoidance sonars. Additional systems, including an intercept array, passive towed-array sonar, underwater voice communication system, and signal processing racks, will provide a comprehensive detection capability across various ranges and frequencies.

According to Sylvain Perrier, Programme Director at Naval Group, the Thales sonar suite played a key role in the company’s successful bid for the RNSC programme. He emphasised that Thales’ technology would ensure the acoustic superiority of the Orka-class submarines while supporting collaboration with Dutch industry.

The agreement aligns with the Dutch government’s strategy to support national industries involved in naval defence. Thales recently partnered with Dutch company Optics11 to integrate its OptiArray technology into the passive towed-array sonar, further strengthening the Netherlands’ industrial base.

Sébastien Guérémy, Vice President of Underwater Systems at Thales, expressed pride in the selection of Thales’ sonar suite for the Orka-class submarines. He highlighted the company’s commitment to delivering innovative and reliable defence solutions for allied nations, ensuring technological superiority for the Dutch armed forces.
