The weapon is designed to engage small- and medium-sized unmanned aircraft and traditional short-range air defense threats. L3Harris said it offers greater range, speed and operational flexibility than current systems but did not release performance figures.
Compatibility with existing launchers
The contract supports the Xtended Range Counter-sUAS Missile program at the Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center. L3Harris is developing the weapon for compatibility with existing U.S. military platforms to simplify integration.
“We are leveraging L3Harris’ deep technical expertise across propulsion, guidance and advanced manufacturing to deliver a next-generation interceptor that meets the Army’s evolving mission requirements,” said Scott Alexander, president of Propulsion Systems within L3Harris’ Missile Solutions business. “This design combines innovative propulsion with advanced seeker technologies to provide a highly capable, modular and cost-effective solution deployable from existing launch platforms.”
Ramjet technology supports longer range
L3Harris said its approach to air-breathing ramjet engines would improve fuel efficiency and extend engagement range. The interceptor combines propulsion and seeker technologies in a modular design.
The announcement did not identify compatible launchers or give a flight-test timetable. It also provided no unit-cost estimate or date for operational deployment.
