U.S. expands sixth-generation aircraft development with B-21 Raider and F-47 fighter

By Defence Industry Europe

Fox News has published an in-depth report outlining the United States' ongoing efforts to develop sixth-generation air power capabilities. The article, titled “Inside America’s 6th-gen arsenal: B-21, F-47 and the future of air dominance”, focuses on the B-21 Raider stealth bomber, the upcoming F-47 fighter jet, and a new generation of autonomous systems that will work together as part of the U.S. Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) programme.

According to the report, the B-21 Raider, developed by Northrop Grumman, is considered the world’s first sixth-generation aircraft and is currently undergoing flight testing. It is intended to replace the B-1 and B-2 bombers and will be capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear weapons while operating in high-threat environments.

The Fox News article also highlights the F-47 fighter jet, which is in development as a next-generation replacement for the F-22 Raptor. While many details remain classified, the F-47 is expected to feature stealth technology, advanced sensors, and artificial intelligence capabilities. It will also be able to control uncrewed aircraft in combat scenarios.

In addition to the manned aircraft, the report outlines the role of Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCAs), autonomous drones designed to operate alongside fighter jets. The U.S. Air Force reportedly plans to field at least 1,000 CCAs, which will support 200 NGAD fighters and 300 F-35s. These uncrewed systems will carry out a variety of missions, including surveillance, jamming, and strike operations.

The article notes that the U.S. Department of Defense is pursuing an open-systems architecture in these aircraft, allowing for regular upgrades and integration of new technologies. Officials say this will enable faster adaptation to future threats and allow for the inclusion of capabilities such as artificial intelligence and digital command and control systems.

Fox News also reports that the NGAD programme reflects a shift in strategic thinking, with a focus on multi-domain operations and the integration of space, cyber, and electronic warfare into air combat. Defence officials quoted in the article emphasise the need to stay ahead of potential adversaries by accelerating development and maintaining technological superiority.
