The exchange took place as the United States sought to maintain maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway has faced disruptions in recent weeks amid rising regional tensions.
Cooper stated that U.S. forces intercepted Iranian cruise missiles and drones during the incident. The actions occurred as part of efforts linked to the Trump administration’s Project Freedom initiative.
He noted that he had “strongly advised” Iran to avoid U.S. military assets. He also indicated that a U.S. naval blockade preventing vessels from leaving Iranian ports would remain in place.
Multiple U.S. Navy destroyers have been deployed in the Persian Gulf to support operations. Cooper said forces have cleared an “effective pathway” through Iranian mines for commercial shipping.
The commander added that vessels from 87 different countries are currently operating in the Persian Gulf. He said U.S. forces have contacted numerous ships and companies within the past 12 hours to “encourage traffic flow” through the strait.
Two cargo ships successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz on Monday under U.S. Navy protection. Guided-missile destroyers provided security during the passage.
The developments come amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran. These tensions have raised concerns about the stability of a ceasefire that has been in place since the previous month.
Iran also launched attacks targeting U.S. allies in the region on the same day. The United Arab Emirates reported missile and drone activity over its airspace.
According to the UAE defense ministry, three cruise missiles were intercepted. A fourth missile reportedly landed in the sea without causing damage.
