The Bunker Buster Act, presented by Representatives Josh Gottheimer (Democrat, New Jersey) and Mike Lawler (Republican, New York), would permit the President to “take actions to ensure Israel is prepared for all contingencies if Iran seeks to develop a nuclear weapon.” The legislation is designed to bolster Israel’s capabilities in the event of renewed nuclear activity by Tehran.
Earlier this month, B-2 Spirit stealth bomber pilots launched 14 bunker buster bombs targeting Iran’s three primary nuclear sites. President Trump claimed the strikes “totally obliterated” Iran’s nuclear programme.
While Israel conducted its own operations, striking multiple Iranian sites and targeting senior military officials, it lacks the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators used by the US. These 30,000-pound precision-guided bombs can penetrate up to 200 feet into fortified targets before detonation.
The United States currently has 19 B-2 Spirit stealth bombers in active service and has never transferred custody of these aircraft to any allies. The proposed bill would mark a significant shift in longstanding policy.
“Iran, the leading state sponsor of terror, and one of America’s top enemies, can never have a nuclear weapon,” said Gottheimer. “That’s why I strongly supported our military actions earlier this month. Iran has killed scores of Americans, including our service members, and repeatedly attacked our key democratic ally, Israel. Israel must be able to defend herself against Iran, and ensure that Iran cannot rebuild its nuclear capabilities.”
“This bill gives the President the authority to equip Israel with the tools and training they need to deter Tehran and make the world a safer place,” Lawler added.
