By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. Marine Corps has deployed Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 211, an F-35B squadron, to Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni, Japan. The squadron, known as the “Wake Island Avengers,” is based out of Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, and was deployed on 10 May 2025.

VMFA-211 will integrate with Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 12, part of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, to support flight operations throughout the Indo-Pacific region. This deployment aligns with the Marine Corps’ Unit Deployment Program (UDP), which aims to enhance operational readiness and foster experience in the Indo-Pacific area.

The Unit Deployment Program is designed to provide U.S.-based Marine units with the opportunity to operate in the Indo-Pacific region through sustained and overlapping deployments. By augmenting the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, the Wake Island Avengers will deliver essential aviation support from both naval and expeditionary environments.

The Marine Corps’ commitment to operational readiness is integral to fulfilling its responsibilities under the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security. This deployment underscores the ongoing dedication to maintaining strong defence and security cooperation between the United States and Japan.

No further comments from Marine Corps officials were immediately available regarding the specific duration of the deployment or future operations. The Wake Island Avengers are expected to actively participate in enhancing regional security throughout their mission.
