The United States State Department has approved a potential sale to Australia of additional M142 HIMARS rocket artillery systems, with a maximum estimated value of $705 million. The transaction may be carried out under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) procedure.

According to the DSCA notice, the Australian government has requested 48 HIMARS launchers, an unspecified number of M1084A2 ammunition resupply vehicles, M1095 trailers and training ammunition packages (LCRRPR). The equipment package is expected to include intercoms, mounts for communications systems, spare parts and engineering, logistical and technical support.

If a contract is concluded, the principal contractors named would be Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, Leonardo DRS and Oshkosh. Should Australia fully exercise the purchase options, Canberra could double its fleet of rocket artillery launchers.

Earlier contracts have seen Australia order a total of 42 launchers, with the first vehicles received in March this year. The State Department’s approval specifically excludes live combat ammunition, which Australia is likely to source domestically as preparations continue to establish GMLRS production capacity on its territory.
