The attack saw Russia launch nearly 70 missiles, including both cruise and ballistic variants, alongside approximately 200 attack drones. The strikes targeted critical energy infrastructure in several regions, including Odesa, Poltava, Chernihiv, and Ternopil, while also causing casualties in Kharkiv.
Zelenskyy praised the contribution of the Mirage 2000 jets, which operated alongside F-16 fighters in defending Ukraine’s airspace. He highlighted the effectiveness of the newly delivered aircraft, stating that they had successfully intercepted Russian cruise missiles.
The Mirage 2000-5 jets were part of a military aid package announced by French President Emmanuel Macron in June 2024. France’s Ministry of Armed Forces confirmed that the first aircraft arrived in early 2025, with Ukrainian pilots, trained for months in France, now actively operating them.
While the exact number of jets delivered remains undisclosed, reports indicate an initial batch of three was expected by the end of the first quarter of 2025. French Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated that the aircraft had been modified to suit Ukraine’s operational requirements.
Originally designed for air superiority missions, the Mirage 2000-5 underwent upgrades at France’s Cazaux Air Base before delivery. The modifications included air-to-ground capabilities, advanced electronic warfare systems to counter Russian jamming, and the ability to launch SCALP-EG/Storm Shadow cruise missiles.
Additionally, the Mirages were equipped with MICA air-to-air missiles and AASM Hammer precision-guided bombs. These enhancements make the jets a versatile addition to Ukraine’s air force, significantly improving its capacity for both defensive and offensive operations.
