Ukraine successfully tests high-speed Ruta missile

By Defence Industry Europe

Ukraine has successfully tested the domestically developed Ruta missile, capable of reaching speeds between 500 and 800 km/h, according to the Defence Express portal. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the successful trial on December 10, marking a significant step in the country's missile development programme.

Ruta, described as a jet-powered drone or cruise missile, has a flight range of up to 300 km and serves multiple roles, including strikes, reconnaissance, and target training. The missile is the work of the Ukrainian startup Destinus and features a design resembling traditional cruise missiles, with detailed schematics highlighting components such as a warhead, fixed wing, fuel tank, electronics unit, and a small turbojet engine.

The missile is launched with a rocket booster and is described as cost-effective relative to its size, speed, and payload capabilities. Although specific performance metrics remain undisclosed, the Ruta can carry reconnaissance equipment and return to base using a parachute recovery system.

At the Eurosatory 2024 exhibition, a full-scale mock-up of the Ruta missile with a slightly modified design was displayed. Analysts estimate that the warhead likely weighs tens of kilograms, possibly nearing 100 kilograms, considering its range and high-speed capabilities.

“The high-speed flight of the Ruta missile, at 500-800 km/h, significantly reduces the effectiveness of Russian mobile fire groups and renders their helicopters ineffective for counter-drone operations,” noted Defence Express.

In addition to the Ruta missile, Ukraine has also begun producing other advanced missiles. Recently, President Zelenskyy handed over the first batch of Peklo missile drones to the Ukrainian Defence Forces, further bolstering the country’s defence capabilities.
