Peretyatko confirmed the missiles were downed “in one air defense battle,” adding, “The operation lasted no more than two minutes,” though he did not specify which Russian strike this referred to. The feat underscores Ukraine’s effective use of the U.S.-Norwegian-made NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System), which has been operational in Ukraine since November 2022.
NASAMS, which can engage targets at distances of up to 50 kilometres depending on the model, employs the AIM-120 AMRAAM missile—also used in Western fighter aircraft. Its adaptability and performance have made it a key asset in Ukraine’s air defence strategy amid intensified Russian aerial attacks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly called on Western partners to increase air defence aid and even offered to purchase U.S.-made Patriot missile systems. However, former U.S. President Donald Trump declined the offer.
As Ukraine pushes for a ceasefire in line with U.S. proposals, Russia continues to reject the terms and has stepped up its military operations. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that in the past week alone, it downed 442 Shahed drones, over 230 other drones, 31 Kh-101/Kh-55SM cruise missiles, seven Iskander ballistic missiles, six Kalibr missiles, and four Kh-59/Kh-69 air-launched missiles.
