Historic strengthening of Norwegian air defence with new NASAMS contract

By Defence Industry Europe

Norway has taken a significant leap in strengthening its air defence capabilities by signing a contract with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace for the delivery of two additional NASAMS air defence batteries. Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram hailed 2024 as a "historic year for air defence."

The latest agreement, valued at NOK 2.7 billion, builds on a previous June contract and includes next-generation launchers, Fire Distribution Centres, and two NASAMS simulators. The contract also marks the culmination of efforts in 2024 to secure deliveries equivalent to four NASAMS batteries in under a year. “This milestone lays a solid foundation for future acquisitions,” said Gram.

The acquisition serves a dual purpose: replacing equipment previously donated to Ukraine and modernising Norway’s NASAMS systems to counter evolving threats. “The NASAMS air defence system is strategically important for Norway’s defence capabilities and vital for safeguarding national security interests. This delivery will provide Norway with the latest generation of NASAMS, developed to meet current and future threats,” stated Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.

With a total NASAMS investment of NOK 5.7 billion in 2024, Norway’s Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) is executing a long-term plan to double the country’s existing air defence capacity. The plan aims to enhance the system’s ability to counter drones and missiles while increasing protection for both the Air Force and the Army.

Gro Jære, Director of the NDMA, highlighted the rapid turnaround in implementing these plans. “Air defence is one of the highest priority areas in the new long-term spending plan. It is gratifying to see how quickly we have turned plans into action, ensuring that the Armed Forces receive modern equipment that strengthens Norwegian and allied security,” she said.

The comprehensive air defence strategy also includes plans to acquire two long-range air defence systems designed to defend against short-range ballistic missiles. These measures reflect Norway’s commitment to safeguarding its security and supporting NATO’s broader objectives.

NASAMS, co-developed by Kongsberg and Raytheon, has been a key element of Norwegian defence since the 1990s. Its modular and adaptable design ensures that the system remains effective against evolving threats, securing its position as one of the most flexible air defence solutions on the market.

By investing heavily in advanced technologies and forging stronger ties with domestic and international suppliers, Kongsberg continues to bolster Norway’s defence preparedness and contribute to global security.
